Mike came to Colorado after serving as a Sergeant E-5 in the Marine Corps from 1971-1974. He survived the transition to Boulder Democrat, enrolling in CU-Boulder, and earning two degrees from DU Law School.
Mike was elected to the Colorado Senate in 1992 and served as Senate Minority Leader for nearly seven of his eight years in office. He was the first Democrat in Jefferson County elected to the Senate in 25 years. He successful led the effort to flip the Colorado Senate blue in 2000 – the first time Democrats held a majority in 40 years.

As an attorney, he has tried cases at all levels of state and federal court. He’s also led a pro bono team of attorneys to challenge the constitutionality of TABOR… and he’s still working on it!
Named Lawyer of the Year in Government Relations for a fourth time in 2022, few can rival Mike’s breadth of experience in law, public policy, and state government relations.
Mike’s passion for public policy extends beyond his professional commitments. He has served in a variety of appointed state positions under Democratic and Republican administrations since his time as a Colorado senator. He served 12 years on 2 different Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains boards.
He’s now in his second term after being re-elected to the West Metro Fire Board
